Two on the ground.

I was out hunting down the 2 goats that had wandered into next door (lucky they don't mind), when I noticed these monarch's seemed to be attracted to the debris on the ground near the concrete holding one of the stumps of the house. Why? Would they still be there when I got back with the camera? Took a few shots of one from the retaining wall then went down to it's level. Two then landed fairly close together and I wondered, would they both open their wings simultanously? and could I get the shot if they did?. Number 3 flew into the shot right on queue.

GREEN TREE FROG

Rescued from the cats, no damage done to him, just a bit of cat hairs and dirt. He is on my right hand and it was a hard to take a pic. But if I had tried to put him down he would have just jumped away, which is what he did after this photo. I love these little fellows and am always happy to find them around the place.

SAME FLOWER DIFFERENT BEE

This demonstrates the size difference between the original Australian native bee and a later variety. Not sure if it was deliberately introduced or just arrived via transport etc. Even though it's a closer shot the size difference is huge. These are nicer looking. The UK bumble bee is larger. I took some photos while I was there, but it was before my macro days so all are pretty ordinary or blurred.

Different flower and it could be a different bee, there were heaps of both varieties.

If the drought continues, there won't be much left in the garden for them.

Have trouble getting a decent photo of these. The wind damages them very quickly or the sun is so bright the camera blows out the details. Ha ha user error you could say.

THE ROUND ROBIN ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGE-Best of RRPC

I really enjoy taking macro shots so couldn't resist the MACRO CHALLENGE in January this year.

So any excuse to take more and as this challenge asked for a new photo I took this as I arrived home from night shift this am. He is on a bromelaid leaf and the flowers attract lots of bees early in the morning. With insects you often only have a split second to get the shot, more time and I may have got the ant in focus. Like David, the ant won, the bee retreated after his close inspection.

Had trouble getting the camera to focus with it's natural background, so moved a potted poinsetta behind it.

Found another pupa this am, quite by accident. It was really close to where I photographed the evening brown butterfly a couple of weeks ago. This one is a lot younger than the last one, as you can still see the obvious caterpillar shape and head. Should take 2 weeks to transform into a butterfly. So I will update with any changes as they happen.

Female Swallowtail

Went out to take a photo of the cows, so had my 80-200 lens fitted to the camera. As I crossed the garden this swallowtail flew onto the bouganvillea. Quickly put the auto setting onto sports/fast mode and just snapped away.
Looks like she was heading straight for me. I cropped the pics before posting.

The following two pics demonstrate why they are called swallowtails.

WANDERER or MONARCH BUTTERFLIES

The Wanderer butterfly is known as a Monarch butterfly in the USA. I can be be sure of getting some photos of wanderers/monarchs if I head out just on sunset. Too early and I frighten them away. If they have settled for the night nothing disturbs them. This guy had well and truely settled.Where as, this one was not to sure where he wanted to sleep. First he found a single solid stick.Then he thought no maybe a smaller stick closer to the ground.Next he decided that since the other one looked so comfortable he would join him. So he flapped around and finally settled in next to the other one.

Must be butterfly weather.

Thought this was a Swallowtail on climbing rose, but now I'm not so sure. Been doing my homework and now I think it is a common crow butterfly. They are a sub family to the wanderers and are the most common butterfly in the Brisbane area. Also known as the Oleanda crow as they will lay their eggs on oleanda shrubs/trees.

Late yesterday I checked and noticed the pupa was a bit darker in colour and decided I would take a photo as I arrived home from night shift this am. Surprised me, but Steven had said that any changes can be quick.

He perched on my finger for 5 secs, (just time to take one shot), then flew away. Isn't he just lovely. Beautiful colours when his wings were open.
